Harper the Label’s Pleated Clutch makes a convincing case. A circular silhouette is folded into sculptural pleats, transforming vegetable-tanned leather into something that feels closer to an object than an ordinary handbag. At 12 inches across, there’s enough room for your phone, wallet, keys, lipstick, and the other things required to successfully leave the house, while the slim profile keeps everything feeling appropriately evening-ish. The unlined interior lets the leather and construction speak for themselves, and like the best vegetable-tanned leather, it will soften, burnish, and become more individual with use. Carry it to dinner, a wedding, or anywhere else you’ve decided pockets are no longer part of the plan. It’s dramatic without being flashy, sophisticated without being overly precious, and unusual enough that nobody needs a logo to know you chose it on purpose.

About the Brand:  Harper the Label

Claire Harper designs bags by thinking surprisingly little about other bags. The artist and leatherworker founded Harper the Label in 2020, designing each piece from her Oakland studio and looking to architecture, ceramics, clothing, knots, folds, and pleats for ideas about what leather might do next. The resulting bags are minimal without being anonymous, sculptural without becoming impractical, and intentionally made to change as they're used. Materials are chosen with the same level of scrutiny:  vegetable-tanned, Leather Working Group-certified leather, ethical U.S. production, and construction intended to become a modern heirloom rather than next season's donation. Because perhaps the most sustainable bag is the one you still genuinely want to carry ten years from now.
