Handwoven in Rwanda from natural and black-dyed raffia wrapped around sweetgrass, the Split Raffia Placemat from Indego Africa brings a wonderful amount of texture and character to the table. The bold two-tone design feels earthy, a little unexpected, and considerably more interesting than the usual assortment of things we put beneath our plates. Each piece is crafted by hand using traditional weaving techniques, with subtle variations that make every one slightly different. There's even a loop on the back for hanging it on the wall, should you decide it's too beautiful to risk an encounter with spaghetti sauce. Which, by the way, is a perfectly reasonable concern.
