The Block Macramé Wall Hanging takes a craft usually associated with knots, plants, and the more ambitious corners of the 1970s and gives it a wonderfully graphic turn. Handwoven from organic cotton, the abstract composition builds rust and black blocks against a natural backdrop, with rows of knots and loose fringe providing all the texture that a flat geometric print cannot. The result sits somewhere between textile art and modernist abstraction, except you can still see the evidence of the hands that made it. Each piece is woven by The Women’s Workshop in Bali, Indonesia, where the work provides single mothers with a living wage while helping support their children’s schooling and groceries. Good design has always been partly about how something is made. This one makes that harder to ignore.
