Aliya Paper Mâché Vessel

The Aliya looks vaguely familiar, which becomes stranger the longer you look at it.

Handcrafted from paper mâché, the Aliya Vessel is built from rounded forms, unexpected negative space, and a tall narrow neck that make it feel somewhere between a vessel, an abstract sculpture, and an object whose original purpose has been lost to history. Its chalky white finish and subtly irregular surface only add to the ambiguity. Despite the substantial appearance, it’s made from paper, an unexpectedly humble material for something with this much presence. The Aliya is decorative rather than watertight, so we'd let the shape do the work and keep the water elsewhere.
