Hand-carved in South Africa from a single piece of Blue Gum eucalyptus, this little antelope strips the animal down to the essentials: long ears, narrow face, tiny horns, and just enough expression to make hanging one on the wall feel like you've acquired a new roommate. Blue Gum is an invasive species in South Africa, where its systematic removal helps protect native woodland and old-growth forests. Here, the unwanted wood gets a considerably longer second life. Hang the Bokkie indoors or let it weather outside, where the solid wood will gradually crack, shift, and develop a silvery gray patina.

Unearthed has found a useful answer to the question of what to do with a tree nobody particularly wants growing there. Based in Cape Town, South Africa, Unearthed creates furniture and sculptural objects from natural materials, including Blue Gum eucalyptus. Considered invasive in South Africa, the wood is removed to help protect indigenous vegetation and then put into the hands of local craftspeople, who carve and shape it into objects designed to stick around considerably longer than the problem that produced them. The wood is allowed to behave like wood, too. It cracks, shifts, weathers, and develops character over time, making every piece increasingly its own.
